The Story of Stuff

1. This documentary was about the development of different materials and goods in our world. As this short video informs the people about how we are living, what we are doing to the space around us, and if there is anyway we can make a difference.

3. Annie uses different techniques to convince people of this massage using different facts and statistics. Many of these facts are true such as she talks about the burning garbage which creates dioxins, and other harmful toxins that are man made. Also, she talks about the US mainly getting their resources from third world countries but in return all they get is pollutant and destroyed habitat. These are only some of the techniques Annie uses to get the message across and convey people to take action to make a change.

5. In the video Annie talks a lot about the different concerns that the people have towards the manufacturers and the government. She tries to convince people and encourage people to take care of our environment. However, she has a strong bias against one side of the story. This side of the story relates back to the United states government and many other larger companies and corporations. Also, in the video it doesn't show the both sides of the story because the bad will take over the good side which are her arguments.

7. In my opinion this video is well done and it is very informative for everyone to see whats going on around them in the society. Annie had really good and convincing points that presents are economy today. The video had visuals on every slide clearly showing and making sure the viewer understands the message and help raise awareness. Overall, Annie was being biased on some of her points she managed to clearly get her points across and definitely catch the viewers attention.

Video Worksheet: The Cove (even numbers)

2. Taiji Japan

4. The turning point in his life that made him completely change was the death of flippy, where she committed suicide in his arms.

6. Japan

8. The fishermen trap the dolphins in the cove by putting noises and sounds. Dolphins are sensitive to sound, therefore they try to escape and they get herded in the cove.

10. Around 23,000 dolphins are killed every year.

12. The toxic substance found in dolphin meat is mercury.

14. Many Japanese people eat it because they are labelling dolphin meat as another type of meat.

16. The number of fish is severely declining because humans are overfishing. 7/10 people depend on fish as their diet and main source of protein.

18. The form of propaganda they plan to sell the meat is they advertise dolphin meat as whale meat and also give free dolphin meat too students for school lunch.

20. Even though he is banned from the meetings he shows up with a video of what the dolphin slaughter actually looks like.

22. Whaling was banned in 1986.

Mark-Recapture Sampling

Methods:
1.
Capturing a sample population from the pasta population
                                                                                 2.
                                            Marking the pastas with different coloured markers
3.
Releasing the marked population back in the bag
4.
With eyes closed, capturing a random sample
5.
Calculations:
First Trial - 34/N=8/74
         N=315
Second Trial - 34/N=4/36
         N=306
Third Trial - 34/N=4/28
         N=238
%Error= (Theoretical-Experimental)/Theoretical
%Error = (560 - 286)/560
= 49%

Analysis:
1. Average estimate: 586
Actual size: 286

Our estimate was near double the actual size we picked out

2. a) In my opinion a big factor affecting the accuracy of our estimate are the amount of pastas we captured. In our first trial we captured around 34 pastas and re-captured only 74 pastas. In that re-capture only 8 pastas were marked which had a big impact on our estimate because it was almost tripled the actual population. For our second trial we re-captured 36 and only 4 of the pastas were marked. This also happened for the 2nd and 3rd trials we had, which led to our results not being accurate.

b) In the actual world, animals are mobile meaning they are constantly moving around. This makes it hard for ecologist to find and capture them. Marking pastas might seem easy, but animals are way more complex when it comes to this process of tagging them. Other problems ecologists might encounter are that animals reproduce and die constantly. This has an impact on the process that ecologists go through because you can never have an exact number on the animal population. Also, animals immigrate and emmigrate which goes back to the fact that they are a mobile population. Overall, this process of tagging is the only way for ecologist to estimate the specific size of a population.

3. The first thing I would change in this design would be the pastas because of its size and shape. Another important thing is do more than 3 trials to get more accurate results, because in our 3 trials we didn't achieve the most accurate result we wanted.
